What a behavioral question looks like
They usually start with “Tell me about a time when…” or “Give me an example of…”. The interviewer wants a specific story, not a general statement of what you would do.
The STAR method
- Situation. The context in one or two sentences.
- Task. What you were responsible for or trying to achieve.
- Action. What you did, step by step. This is the longest part: spend most of your time here.
- Result. What happened, ideally with a number, and what you learned.
Say “I”, not “we”: the interviewer is scoring what you did.
Common behavioral questions
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague or manager.
- Describe a time you missed a deadline or made a mistake. What did you do?
- Give an example of when you led a project or took initiative.
- Tell me about a time you handled a difficult customer or stakeholder.
- Describe a time you had to learn something quickly.
- Tell me about a time you worked under pressure.
What makes an answer strong
- One real story, with enough detail to be believable.
- Your own actions, not what the team did in general.
- A concrete result: a number, a decision, a changed process.
- Honesty about mistakes. A good answer to “a time you failed” shows what you changed afterwards.
Prepare five or six stories that can be reused across themes: conflict, deadline, mistake, leading, influencing, change.
Practice with a spoken interview
Readyo is an iPhone app that runs a spoken practice interview: an AI interviewer asks behavioral and role questions out loud, you answer by voice, and the report scores relevance, structure, evidence and precision, clarity and composure, with a better version of each answer built from your own words. Behavioral is one of the stages you can choose. It is practice only; the app is free to download and interviews are paid.
Frequently asked questions
What does STAR stand for?
Situation, Task, Action, Result. It is a way to structure an answer to a behavioral question so that it tells a clear story.
How long should a STAR answer be?
About two minutes. Spend most of that on the action you took and finish with a concrete result.
What if I have no work experience?
Use examples from studies, volunteering, sports or projects. The interviewer wants to see how you behave and reflect, not only where it happened.
